Deploying basic Google Analytics tracking with Google Tag Manager

Deploying basic Google Analytics tracking with Google Tag Manager

OVERVIEW

A step-by-step guide to setting up Google Analytics 4 page view tracking through Google Tag Manager, from creating a variable and trigger to configuring the Google tag and submitting.

Introduction

In [Google Tag Manager basic setup] we introduced Google Tag Manager (GTM), a useful tag management tool. This time we explain how to use GTM to set up Google Analytics 4 (GA4), using page view tracking as the example.

Steps

  1. Get the tracking ID from the Google Analytics account for the website you want to track.
  2. Create a new variable and choose Constant as the type.
  3. In Value, enter the tracking ID you copied from Google Analytics.
  4. Create a new trigger. Because Google Analytics needs to track views of every page on the site, choose Page View as the trigger type and select All Page Views.
  5. Create a new tag and choose Google Analytics > Google Tag. For the tag ID, use the variable you just set up.
  6. Expand Configuration settings and add the configuration parameter “send_page_view” with the value “true”.
  7. Under Triggering at the bottom, choose the trigger you created in step 4.
  8. When you have finished, remember to click Submit. Tracking only goes live on the website once you do.

In the digital age, GA4 is not only a tool for large enterprises. Want to ride this wave of data? Get in touch.
